An extension the IRS grants without asking why, as long as you request it by the original deadline.
Form 4868, Form 7004, and Form 8868 are all automatic. The IRS does not review a reason and does not send an approval. It sends a notice only if the request is rejected, almost always for an identification mismatch. Automatic does not mean the payment is extended.
