First-time penalty abatement request letter
If you have filed and paid on time for the past three years, the IRS will usually remove a failure-to-file or failure-to-pay penalty once. This letter asks for it.
Reasonable cause statement
When first-time abatement does not apply, you can ask the IRS to remove a penalty because circumstances beyond your control caused the failure. This statement lays out the facts in the order the IRS reads them.
CP14 response letter
A short letter that responds to a balance due notice: what you are paying, what you dispute, and what you are attaching.
CP2000 response letter
Explains a mismatch between what a third party reported and what you filed, agreeing in part or disagreeing with documents attached.
Missed deadline explanation
A plain statement of why a return or payment was late, for use with a late return or a penalty relief request.
State extension request letter
For states that want a written request rather than a form. States the federal extension, the tax year, and the estimated payment enclosed.
Payment plan request cover letter
A cover letter to accompany Form 9465 or an online payment plan confirmation, stating the balance, the proposed monthly amount, and the first payment date.
Document cover letter
A one-page cover letter for documents you are sending in response to an IRS request: what the notice asked for, what is enclosed, and nothing else.
