What it means
The bank rejected the direct deposit of your refund, and the IRS is mailing a check instead.
Respond within
The date on the notice
What to send
Nothing. The check follows.
When to get help
If the check does not arrive within the time stated, start a refund trace through the number on IRS.gov.

What the letter says

Wrong account number, closed account, or a bank that refused the deposit. The refund is not lost. A paper check goes to the address on the return.

What to do

Wait for the check. If you moved, file Form 8822 immediately so the check goes to the right place.

What to gather

  • The notice
  • Your return showing the account entered

Write back

The Document cover letter tool builds the response in the order the IRS reads it. Fill it in, review it, print it, and send it with copies of the documents above and the notice stub on top.

Before you send anything

This is general information, not tax advice. Situations differ. Check with your tax advisor before you send anything. Nothing on this page creates a client relationship.
