What it means
The IRS needs you to call and confirm that you filed the return it received under your number.
Respond within
30 days from the date on the notice
What to send
Nothing by mail. Call the number on the IRS page for Letter 4883C with the letter and your returns in hand.
When to get help
If you did not file the return, follow the identity theft steps the IRS gives you on the call.

What the letter says

Same purpose as a 5071C, but this letter asks for a phone call rather than offering the online option.

What to have ready

The letter, the return in question, the prior year return, and any W-2 or 1099 forms. The call takes a while; expect hold time in season.

After the call

If you confirm the return is yours, processing resumes. If it is not, the IRS marks the account and tells you how to file your real return.

What to gather

  • The 4883C letter
  • The tax return it references
  • A prior year return
  • W-2s and 1099s for the year

Write back

The Document cover letter tool builds the response in the order the IRS reads it. Fill it in, review it, print it, and send it with copies of the documents above and the notice stub on top.

Before you send anything

This is general information, not tax advice. Situations differ. Check with your tax advisor before you send anything. Nothing on this page creates a client relationship.
