Most states with an income tax use the federal individual deadline, so April 15, 2027 covers you in the majority of them. The exceptions are the ones that cost people money, because nobody checks.
States with their own individual dates
A handful of states set later deadlines. Virginia individual returns are due May 1. Louisiana individual returns are due May 15. Delaware and Iowa use April 30. Hawaii uses April 20. Confirm the current year's date with the state, since these move with weekends the same way federal dates do.
States with no income tax
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming have no broad personal income tax. Washington taxes capital gains above a threshold, and New Hampshire's tax on interest and dividends ended after 2024. Businesses in several of these states still have franchise or gross receipts returns with their own dates.
Business dates
Corporate and pass-through deadlines vary more than individual ones. Some states match the federal March 15 and April 15 split. Some put everything on one date. Some franchise taxes are due on the anniversary of formation. Check each state where the entity files.
Extensions
A federal extension is not automatically a state extension. Three patterns exist, described on the state extensions page: states that honor the federal one, states that want their own form, and states that only extend if you pay by the original date.
Common mistake
Extending federally, assuming the state followed, and discovering in October that the state charged a late filing penalty from April.
